Bixinau, authentic hospitality between history and materials

Reading time: minutes

Tradition and contemporary design come together in a new hospitality venue that celebrates history and materials.

In the historic center of Tortolì, in Ogliastra, Bixinau comes to life—a term that in ancient Sardinian means “neighborhood.” A name that encapsulates the essence of the project: an authentic holiday home where hospitality is interwoven with memory and local culture.

The renovation, designed by LAPIS Creative, faithfully respected reclaimed materials, traditional colors, and typical architectural elements, such as the ancient jalousies: historic textures that once served as skylights. Their name recalls their original function: to create a discreet filter between indoors and outdoors, allowing women—especially in Eastern palaces—to observe the world outside without being seen, because of the jealousy of husbands who wanted to protect their privacy. In addition to ensuring ventilation and natural light, these structures became highly charming ornamental details.

To characterize the interior spaces of Bixinau, the coverings from the Amuri collection by Ragno were chosen, in particular the 3D Gelosia Structure in the Biscotto color, size 20×20 cm, which is inspired by the ancient terracotta jalousies.

In the project, the ceramic reinterpretation of this historic motif adorns three landings of the staircase, the wall coverings of four bathrooms, and the baseboard along the entire structure, creating a harmonious dialogue between past and present. The three-dimensionality of the surface and the color nuances of the Amuri collection give depth and authenticity to the rooms, transforming them into warm and welcoming spaces.
